Cookie Privacy Plugins for WordPress

I am researching WordPress plugins that add a cookie privacy pop-up to a website’s homepage. These plugins notify users that their clicks are being tracked by Google Analytics.

In order to be compliant with Google Analytics, this pop-up is technically required. As far as Alphabet/Google actually enforcing this? Ehhh. It’s not a felony offense, just a “best practice” recommendation, especially if you plan to link your Google Analytics to email newsletter campaigns.

This video shows the best cookie plugins for WordPress in 2023.

CookieYes is my first test.

Just added it to the Georgic Media website and the design can be configured several ways:

There is an option to create a free account on the CookieYes web app that can connect to your website so you can manage all your settings from the web app and access advanced features like:

✓Cookie Scanner – Discover cookies on your site and auto-block them prior to user consent (Legally required)

✓Consent Log – Record user consents to demonstrate proof of compliance (Legally required)

However, the plugin says on the back-end: “You can continue using the plugin without connecting to the web app if you wish so. Please note that the standalone version of the plugin doesn’t provide some advanced features. However, it offers unlimited pageviews in contrast to that of the web app-connected version.”

Some features:

  1. Consent expiration date can be set for different amounts of time. Default is 365 days.
  2. Load cookies prior to consent (selecting any of these options makes the website non-compliant with GDPR).
  3. Hide categories from banner (again, selecting any of these options makes the website non-compliant with GDPR).
  4. Privacy Policy Generator — looks like you can auto-generate a privacy policy for your specific company/website by filling out a form that includes your company email, address, phone number, and other information.

Complianz

This plugin comes with a Wizard with an overview of tasks to set up a cookie pop-up, which can be configured to appear in the bottom left corner of the screen, centered, or any other section.

WebMe Cookie & Privacy

Not compatible with my version of WordPress 6.2 (same version as my client’s so this one is out).

GDPR Cookie Compliance

The backend UI of this one isn’t as “pretty” as the others above, however, it’s nicely integrated into the design on the front-end.
