Tech Assistance for Baby Boomers

My dad just turned 83 years old. This means he had to renew his license plate tags so he went to the DMV website and got caught in an Internet loop for an hour just trying to figure out which buttons to click.

I’m a GenX woman, first generation to grow up with Title IX. I took AP Calculus, AP American History, and AP Physics, got the Florida Academic Scholarship, and a Hispanic Journalists scholarship, and got hired to help build a tech startup in San Francisco with a bunch of other Hispanics at Latino.com in 1999 which of course no longer exists, but the platform on which we built it – the Internet – is very much alive, but not well. What do I mean by that?

Older folks, aka the Baby Boomers, grew up in a time when scrolling and swiping and clicking were not things they learned as children. As technology gets more sophisticated, they are having trouble accomplishing the tasks that are necessary for surviving in a system that is automated and roboticized.
